Johnny Newell

The term "Coaching Legend" was a perfect fit for Johnny Newell, producer of fine teams and athletes at Hartford Public High School for 34 years, 1919-1953.

His players and teams were well coached, always came to play, and, like Coach Newell, brought great credit to Hartford Public High School.

Coach Newell had one other talent which is important to coaches, even today. He prepared young men for the game of life, always stressing the importance of hard work, being responsible, and respecting others.

Two awards, in particular, represent the high regard that others had for Johnny Newell. In 1955, he was presented a Gold Key by the Connecticut Sportswriters Alliance, and in 1986 he was inducted into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association's Hall-of-Fame.

Johnny Newell died in 1981.
