John P. "Clipper" Smith

Hartford Public High School's major football luminary.

Captain of the 1923 Owls, then played for Coach Knute Rockne at Notre Dame, 1925, 1926, 1927.

Captained the 1927 Irish to a 7-1 record; played guard, and was named to 6 different All-American Teams.

Served as Head Football Coach at North Carolina State and Duquesne.

Named to National Football Foundation Hall-of-Fame and Notre Dame Hall-of-Fame in 1975.

Received Gold Key from Connecticut Sportswriters Alliance in 1960.
