Joe Kubachka

Boy’s Basketball Coach, 1951 to 1966; took the Owls to unprecedented heights which included:

The 1960-61 New England Championship by defeating Wilbur Cross of New Haven, 68-62, giving HPHS its first-ever title.

The 1961-62 State and New England Championships; defeated Hartford Bulkeley, 67-64 in the CIAC final, and again Bulkeley, 47-39, for the second straight N.E. crown at the old Boston Garden.

Kubachka-led HPHS teams compiled an overall record of 176-86; a number of his clubs won Capital District Conference and City Championships, and many of his players, Eddie Griffin, Stan Poole, Jim Benedict, Gene Jenkins, Bruce Maddox, Tom Karanda and Len Kostek, among others, were selected for such post- season honors as All-American, All-New England, All-State, All-Capital District Conference and All-City.

His own personal laurels include, in 2003, induction into the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame.
