Bill Pitkin

Top student, excellent athlete best describes Bill Pitkin, Hartford Public High School Class of 1943.

He starred in football, basketball and baseball for the Owls, then went on to Trinity College where he was also a standout in the 3 sports, and was awarded 9 letters. Professionally, he played basketball with the Hartford Hurricanes.

His field was recreation, and his accomplishments and affiliations were many and varied. They included:

  • Member, Hartford Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Wethersfield’s first Recreation Director, 29 years, 1960-1989.
  • Served 3 times as Wethersfield’s Acting Town Manager.
  • President, Connecticut Recreation Society, 1966.
  • Member, New England Recreation and Parks District Committee of National Recreation and Parks Association.
  • Distinguished Service Award, Connecticut Recreation Society, 1970.
  • In 1989, the Wethersfield Community Center was renamed the William J. Pitkin Community Center.
  • And, many, many others.  Bill Pitkin died in 1989.
