Joseph MascoloPre-World War II Hartford Public High School baseball star; played shortstop and second base as the 1941 and 1942 teams won the District, City and Triangular League Championships. Played American Legion baseball and won the State Championship in 1940. Received professional offers; signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. Played in the Cardinals’ system until called to U.S. Navy duty early in World War II. Served on U.S.S. Baltimore, heavy cruiser, in the Pacific; was awarded four battle stars, then was assigned to an Officer’s Training Program at Cornell University. Served as captain, and played shortstop for the “Big Red’s” 1945 baseball team. Pursued a career in engineering; played in the New Britain Industrial League and the Hartford Twilight League, and coached youth baseball.
