James L. WoodworthHartford Public High School’s Head Baseball Coach from 1931 to 1947, and turned out strong teams and tremendous players, including Hall of Fame inductees Pete Naktenis, Bill Pitkin, Hal Heintz, Jack Scully, Joe Mascolo , Larry Hutnick, Paul Mazzarella, Ralph Viola and Buddy Amato. Born in New London on July 23, 1903, he prepared for a career as an educator by graduating from New London Bulkeley High School in 1923, graduated from Amherst College in 1927, and went on to attend the Harvard School of Education. Throughout his career, he was a respected figure at HPHS for 34 years, 1930 to 1964. Jim Woodworth, whose hobbies included tennis (which he played until the age 89), died in 2001. He was 97.
